Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) Commissioner General Mr. Fredrick Chilukutu has disclosed that government has procured bunk beds and beddings for inmates countrywide. The Commissioner General said this on Friday January 20, 2023 during the ZCS Senor Officer’s Annual Ball which was held in Kabwe. Hel said so far 50,000 blankets and 25, 000 mattresses have been delivered including materials for producing inmates’ bunk beds and that production was on going in Correctional Workshops. The consignment is in line with Government aspiration to create a humane living environment in Correctional/Prison facilities. The move came as a result of the directive by President Hakainde Hichilema to ZCS to decongest facilities to create a humane environment in Correctional Centres. Chief Government Spokesperson Chushi Kasanda during her visit to Kabwe Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison and Correctional Centre last year revealed the release of 40 million kwacha for procurement of beds, blankets and mattresses for the inmates. Meanwhile, 1080 eligible inmates cleared exams in various skills by the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA), while 99 passed General Certificate Examination (GCE), and another 99 made it to grade ten.
