Police rescues four year old from being sold by father

AFTER hearing rumours that there were buyers who were merchandising in toddlers, a 32-year-old man of Nsama in Northern Province took to his heels and went to his his ex-wife's place and withdrew his four year daughter to put her on the market.

Kalumba Chipili, who hails from the shores of Lake Tanganyika at Nsumbu village in Northern Province, concocted a story that he wanted to be living with the baby and tricked his ex-wife.

Before the mother of the child could consent, Chipili used his fast hands and sneaked out of the house carrying his 'for sale' daughter.

To Chipili, this daughter could him some quick cash, unlike applying to access the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment funds.

After getting the child, his tongue went dry at the imagination of the cash he was going to be counting using his saliva-marinated fingers, as he set the asking price for his baby girl at K130,000.

When the police got wind of what was happening yesterday, they disguised themselves as buyers at around 16:50 hours at a named guest house in Mpulungu.

A few minutes later, Chipili arrived at the guest house and confirmed that he was selling his daughter at K130, 000.

The suspect was made to sign an agreement form before receiving the cool cash.

But things took a different turn after he signed the agreement form, as the officers pounced on him, leaving him shocked like a cable thief electrocuted by ZESCO live wires.

Zambia Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, in a statement, stated that the suspect is currently detained in police custody for the offence of human trafficking.

Hamoonga disclosed that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
