Newly graduate soldier dies hours after graduation in Zambia

AFTER a gruelling yet fulfilling seven month long military training, the dream of becoming a soldier for 24-year-old Sililo Mukela has been shattered as his life was terminated in a hit and run road accident this morning.  Mukela, of house number 52 Chisokone Avenue in Luanshya on the Copperbelt, who was among 1, 471 soldiers recruited in the Zambia National Service (ZNS), was hit by an unknown vehicle around 04:00 hours on Great North Road in New Market area of Kabwe.  He is said to have died on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries. Central Province police commanding officer Charity Munganga, who confirmed the incident, said Mukela was hit in unclear circumstances by a yet-to-be identified speeding vehicle as he was walking beside the road on the left side, heading south. She said the body is in the morgue at Kabwe Central Hospital awaiting postmortem, and identification by family members.
