HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION REPORTS ON 2024 COMPLAINTS AND PROGRESS
Today, Human Rights Commission Chairperson Pamela Towela Sambo held a press briefing to share the Commission's progress and highlight the human rights complaints received and addressed in 2024.
*Key Achievements and Developments*
- The Commission completed formulating guidelines for the Access to Information Act, which will enhance the public's right to access information once implemented ¹.
- The Commission advised information holders to proactively publish information, promoting transparency and accountability.
- A total of 2,200 complaints were received, with 1,700 cases (77%) against State Actors, mainly Law Enforcement Agencies, and 500 cases (23%) against Non-State Actors.
*Complaints and Resolutions*
- The majority of complaints against State Actors involved over-detention, prolonged pre-trial detention, and maladministration of justice.
- The Commission successfully investigated and resolved 1,300 complaints (59% of total cases).
- 160 complaints were referred to other institutions, while 86 cases were not admitted or discontinued due to lack of jurisdiction.
- 654 cases (29%) are still undergoing investigations.

- The Commission will continue internal reforms and restructuring to enhance its mandate and promote human rights and freedoms for all.
