GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo — U.N. troops have been deployed outside Goma as M23 rebels continue their advance towards the city. The main city in eastern Congo has been gripped by panic, with bombs heard in the outskirts and hundreds of civilians being treated at the main hospital.

The M23 rebels, who have been making significant territorial gains in recent weeks, seized the town of Sake, located just 27 kilometers (16 miles) from Goma. This has raised concerns about the safety of the city's 2 million residents and the regional hub for security and humanitarian efforts.

The Congolese army has been engaged in intense fighting with the rebels, who are reportedly backed by Rwanda. The situation has led to a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people displaced and many seeking refuge in Goma.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed alarm over the escalating conflict and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities
