President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Lt. Col. Anthony Kyakabale, a former rebel leader and one of the first 27 armed NRA fighters, as Senior Presidential Advisor on Reconciliation. This appointment comes after Kyakabale's tumultuous past with the government.

Background on Kyakabale's Exile
Kyakabale fled to Sweden in 2001 after Museveni's government received intelligence about a potential coup plot involving Kyakabale and his friend, Lt. Col. Samson Mande. Fearing arrest, they escaped but reportedly struggled to garner support for their plans to wage war against the government. Eventually, they negotiated their return to Uganda.

Kyakabale's Role in NRA's History
As a key figure in the National Resistance Army (NRA), Kyakabale played a significant role in the fight against Gen. Lutwa's UNLA soldiers. Notably, he was chosen to fire the only RPG during an ambush at Kyekumbi in Lwamata, successfully hitting a moving lorry carrying Tanzanian soldiers.
