Accra, August 6, 2025 — A Ghana Air Force helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff from Accra this morning, killing all eight people on board, including two government ministers and senior military officials.
The Z-9 helicopter departed at approximately 9:12 AM en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. According to aviation authorities, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control minutes after departure. It was later discovered to have crashed in a remote area, where it burst into flames upon impact.

Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chair of the National Democratic Congress
Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director General of NADMO
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu
Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
Military sources confirmed that the bodies were recovered, though several were severely burned. Flying Officer Ampadu, a graduate of KNUST, was noted for his dedication and professionalism.
President John Mahama has declared a national day of mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. All official engagements have been suspended.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical failure, though weather conditions at the time are also being reviewed.
The Ghana Armed Forces and Civil Aviation Authority are leading the inquiry.
